ON REPEAT: Art Feynman, Warm Bodies, Silicon Prairie, Raghd, Water From Your Eyes, Bar Italia, Yaeji
"She plays the piano, she stole it from the mall"
Buncha newish/oldish music picks, including a few new songs from people I’ve featured before. Playing catch-up because I haven’t posted for a month, whoops. Here’s a link to a playlist where I keep all of this stuff.
Water From Your Eyes “Out There”
We had Water From Your Eyes on The Best Show and they had a fantastic set and were also cool and nice and we tried our best to match their vibe with the performance.
I’ve talked about them on here before, but the song I have on repeat lately is “Out There” highlighted here:
Art Feynman “Therapy at 3pm”
This song is helpful to me because this is also the same time I have therapy.
Art Feynman is also known as Luke Temple, though I’m not sure the difference between the two projects aside from Art being a little more freaky, with disparate elements of krautrock and African music, and he wears a long blonde wig or a weird hat. This, for some not-glaringly obvious reason, appeals to me deeply.
Raghd “Easy Go!”
Some nice chill vocals over some breakbeat YA-YA-YA-YAH. Raghd is from Gothenburg.
Bar Italia “Changer”
This band plays things close to the chest. I like that. I know they are on Dean Blunt’s label and they’re from London and that’s about it. I also know that all their songs are a little different and I immediately like all of them. I suspect a big year is to come.
Yaeji “Easy Breezy”
I think Yaeji is one of the best, as evidenced by my multiple posts about her very good songs. Here she’s riding (with her dog Jiji) around Brooklyn in a new video that kinda has a Shibuya-kei bossa nova vibe to it.
Silicone Prairie “Cows”
I’ve been looking forward to new stuff from Silicon Valley (aka Ian Teeple) since one of my pandemic-era fave albums, My Life on the Silicone Prairie. Ian was also in one of my favorite bands a few years ago, Warm Bodies (more on them in a bit). This is fun jangle pop that has been cooking in the sun for a minute.
THE GOLD STANDARD
Warm Bodies “I Need A Doctor”
This is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands, the aforementioned Warm Bodies. Singer Olivia Gibb comes off unhinged in the best way. The nervous-but-patient waiting for this song to start is so great, then once she gets into it it’s like she’s trying to force herself out of her own skin, but is still in control enough to charismatically play to the camera. I mean just scroll to 2:08—that deserves an an award.
The band is killing it too, particularly Ian with the dangly (a sartorial choice I aspire to confidently adopt someday). There’s incredible shredding and drumming. The dancers(?) are an added touch, however intentional that is. And they’re having fun in the booth. There’s a fucking golf swing wipe!!!
This is from Highland Park TV, which is cool and we are spirit siblings because I too, did weird shit on public access TV. I’ve watched this so many times and I’m terribly jealous it didn’t happen on The Special!
