ON REPEAT: Ataque de Caspa, Hannah Jadagu, SiR, Girl Ray, Chanel Beads, bar italia, Nourished By Time
Still drugged you so I'm bein erred
I write to you in mild pain, I am recovering from a long-awaited and much needed gallbladder surgery. Luckily, it was the first surgery I’ve ever gotten and it was a unique experience.
I have never done anesthesia (more of a cocaine man, myself) and I was a bit concerned when I walked into a room FUCKING BLASTING “Dream On” by Aerosmith, which I guess is their little joke, or maybe just the doctor’s taste in classic rock, but it’s a terrifying song to lose consciousness to.
I came to in the recovery room and immediately asked the doctor checking on me, “So, am I good to hop on my Harley and get the fuck out of here?” He was VERY concerned, but I was high as hell and thought it was a very funny thing to say to someone while waking from unconsciousness.
Then I made a few “I’m ok” texts to people and I guess the painkillers really did a number on me and it made me think maybe I may have messed up on the delivery.
I will be sitting in my chair for a while healing so it’ll be a few weeks til I can get BACK ON THE HOG.
I also have put out two more episodes of The John Gentle Show, with appearances from Jessy Morner-Ritt and Hayley McFarland, as well as my regular co-host Emma Callahan who is the MVP of this thing. You can catch the entire video show and podcast at the Best Show Patreon.
Ok, enjoy my song picks, compiled here.
Hannah Jadagu “Admit It”
I got into Hannah Jadagu with her album of songs recorded on her iPhone. Now she’s got a whole thing going with Sub Pop despite being a 20-year-old NYU student. Like many of the artists I enjoy and feature on this she shifts genres song-to-song, going from indie rock to electronic R&B.
Chanel Beads “Ef”
Chanel Beads is Shane Lavers and producer Maya McGrory. I’ve been listening to this track here and there for a while but I have yet to do the deep dive.
SiR “John Redcorn”
How have I not seen this? This incredible video puts SiR in the place of King of the Hill’s resident hunky Puebloan new age healer, and lead singer of the band Big Mountain Fudgecake, John Redcorn.
It’s an incredible video directed by Daniel Russel & Dominic Polcinco that eschews punchlines for a mood (and inexplicably, hover-Jeeps). Much like Redcorn, SiR is also in an affair with a married woman—this one’s named Neicy and instead of Dale she’s with a chain-smoking Ab-Soul. Kendrick, Jay Rock and ScHoolboy Crew round out the Inglewood version of the Arlen alley crew.
bar italia “world’s greatest emoter”
Nothin’ to see here, just another killer bar italia track.
Nourished by Time “The Fields”
Nothin’ to see here, just another killer Nourished By Time track.
Girl Ray “Everybody’s Saying That”
Reminder, I love indie disco. Everybody in this video looks happy and healthy. I look so pathetic gently swaying in pain to this right now.
THE GOLD STANDARD
Ataque de Caspa “La Pesca”
Ataque de Caspa was formed in the mid-80’s in Madrid, and their album, Supongamos por ejemplo, is one of my alltime favorites. It was never actually released in the 80’s—Manuel Sánchez of Los Punsetes uploaded it to MySpace, leading to its release in 2011.
Since then, they’ve been covered and even reunited to perform and it’s sincerely so very sweet to see lead singer Carmen Álvarez surprised and overwhelmed when the crowd joins in singing the song.
It’s getting reissued with a cool new cover. This particular song is my favorite of theirs. The song itself wonders what would happen if a gale hit the Cantabrian coastal fleet in Spain, and what effect it would have on the sardine market.
"Se consume menos y se paga más" (Less is consumed and more is paid.)
I did not know this!
Ok, that’s it.

Hahaha last time I got put under the anesthesiologists were blasting “hello from the other side” 😂
