ON REPEAT: Doechii, ECD, Helado Negro, Delicate Steve, MUNYA & Kainalu, eat-girls, Mary Shelley, The Marias, cumgirl8
mouth-heavy
Catching up on a bunch of music at the end of the year and digging deeper into the stuff I liked. Check out the ongoing playlist here.
Doechii “Boiled Peanuts”
I talk about Doechii a lot here, including the song in first part of this clip last week before this performance popped up on Colbert. This is so fucking cool. What a star. The two other women kill it too. I feel like people will talk about this years from now as a breakout moment.
“With the help of hair artist Malcom Marquez, we were able to make this symbolic art performance come to life in just a short week.
“A special s/o to some of my inspirations; the incredible [Solange] [Carlota Guerrero] and [MF DOOM] (rip). This is my take on the future of Hip Hop.”
This whole performance with DJ Milan is must-see too, it’s so much wilder live and in high heels and she makes it look effortless.
The Marias “Hamptons”
The Marias also had a great set at Camp Flog Gnaw and opened with this one. They also covered “Lovefool” which I believe and have said before is thee perfect pop song that shan’t be covered but you know what? They did ok.
MUNYA & Kainalu “Don’t Go Away”
Another highlight from the Margo Guryan cover album from Montreal’s MUNYA and Hawaii’s Kainalu.
Helado Negro “I Wanna Wake Up With You”
What a pleasant thing. I’ve been a fan of Helado Negro for a long time now, but since he’s got the shorter salt-and-pepper hair, he kinda looks like someone your grandma would be into—compared to his old look, “guy standing at the back of a Bushwick noise show” might inspire.
ECD "東京っていい街だなぁ"
“Tokyo is a nice city to live in.” I’ve been listening to a lot of Japanese 90’s hip-hop lately. This one by ECD (Erstwhile Cool Duder) samples Barbara Jean English's "You're Gonna Need Somebody to Love You" which makes up for the fact that I don’t speak Japanese. I have a whole guide for Tokyo that I’ve passed around to friends who have traveled there, even though I haven’t actually been there. I watch a lot of videos of people going around Tokyo. It seems nice!
Delicate Steve “I’ll Be There”
How did I not talk about this already? I go way back with Steve Marion and even opened up for the band earlier this year. I can’t speak highly enough of Steve’s talents and intricate guitar technique and I may someday, but in the meantime I especially like the idea of recruiting Joe Cappa for this music video. I’m a huge fan of Joe’s mouth-heavy cartoons, and here’s a great one to put you in the Christmas mood:
cumgirl8 “Karma Police”
feral
eat-girls “Canine”
These spookers were on my Halloween playlist but they have a whole lot of stuff to keep the vibe going into the new year. Also, I’ve talked about the post-punk “wuoop!” and this song’s got a good one.
Gut Health “Uh oh”
Speaking of “wuoop!” (though this is more of a “goioop!”)
Mary Shelley “Bourgeois de Ville”
Talked about these Mary Shelley freaks a while back! Another fun one with a lot of performance and energy. Gotta say I hate this mouth-heavy thumbnail tho.
NEW YORK “night n day”
Again, more mouth-heavy thumbnails. This is not a Frank Sinatra cover but actually a Ladytron interpolation from a band impossible to Google. NEW YORK is a musical duo made up of performance artists Gretchen Lawrence and Coumba Samba who nail a certain 2000s something I can’t put my finger on. It reminds me of seeing Mixel Pixel videos late at night.
Mixel Pixel “Cyclone Took My Baby”
