Hey all! John Gentle made an appearance on The Best Show this week to talk about “arabic breads” and be a sad menace to Tom Scharpling. Check it out on this week’s episode.
My buzzy Vin wrote a fun thing about this Spike Jonze & Notorious BIG collaboration, and all I can think about is how good this kid was at being Puffy.
Here is da playlist. Now let’s listen to very nice songs:
Deerhoof “To Fly or Not To Fly”
I once dated someone who loved Deerhoof so much that it was constantly on and I grew tired of them. This last record has gotten be back on the ‘Hoof Train and this might be one of my favorite songs in their very deep catalogue. This sounds just as fresh as anything out there.
Remember there was a race horse named Hoof Hearted?
Jane Birkin “Mélo Mélo”
I’ve been listening to more French music after accidentally going to a French-themed dance party in LA’s Chinatown instead of my friend’s birthday party. Everybody was very hot but also a little lame in that scarf and beret kinda way and they danced like Peanuts characters. I’ll take that over any dorky Toubin-esque dance party.
Laetitia Sadier “Un Soir, Un Chien”
Plus de musique française! This is a Les Rita Mitsouko cover but I like the Stereolab singer’s version from 15 years ago a little more than the original.
Snooze "Your Consciousness Goes Bip"
Une autre chanson française mais celle-ci est un tout petit peu plus trip-hop via NoHo Hank.
CLIPZ “Shorty”
Is it just me or is K. P. & Envyi’s 1998 song “Swing My Way” having a little moment? I even wrote about it! This rave-y remix keeps the chill vibes of the original.
Lewis OfMan & Alicia te quiero “Siesta Freestyle”
musique en milieu de matinée / música de media mañana
Depresión Sonora “Ya No Hay Verano”
I watched some of Coachella (from my bed, but I still wore my Native American headdress—are we still making that joke?) and I liked this song from Depresión Sonora despite the hat.
Alice Phoebe Lou “Glow”
I like this song from a few years ago, but don’t have much to say about it! Sorry!! There’s a whole documentary about the making of the album if you want more context! Leave me alonE!!!!
THE GOLD STANDARD
Serena-Maneesh “D.I.W.S.W.T.T.D.”
I was on a bit of a Kristoffer Borgli kick after watching Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario and I was going back and watching his old music videos and was reminded of this song which I loved back in 2010! I can’t say I love the video but it does kinda fit the song. Borgli is very hit or miss but those swings are always wild.
