ON REPEAT: Water From Your Eyes, Little Simz, Brasileiro Garantido, bar italia!, Yo La Tengo, Nourished by Time, Fazerdaze, K.P. & Envyi, San Giovanni Bassista
[barking sound effect] [synthesizer] [bird squawk sound effect]
Hey all, I’ve been busy, but I have a backlog of songs I wanna put on the playlist, so here’s an end-of-summer song dump, featuring songs I’ve loved for a while and haven’t gotten around to writing about! While reading this, you may tell how tired I am!
Here’s a link to a playlist where I keep all of this stuff.
Water From Your Eyes “Barley”
A killer band from Brooklyn that I immediately liked on the first listen (of many). I keep hearing people bring them up in conversation too, which means they’re doing something right. I will be seeing them when they come to Los Angeles and will be trying to sing along to this song which isn’t the kind of song you sing along to.
San Giovanni Bassista "Summer Sweat"
A Kate Sweeney recommendation. Said this song got the people moving while DJing. This song has barks and birds in it, among other things.
Kate did an NTS show, check it out!
Fazerdaze “Thick of the Honey”
Another artist I’ve been meaning to write about for a while! From New Zealand, Fazerdaze is just the stage name of Amelia Rahayu Murray, who has developed a sound for years now, but the latest album is full of new surprises.
Little Simz “Venom”
Little Simz is a rapper from the UK, who has been the talk of the town thanks to the critically acclaimed albums she’s put out over the last few years—VENOM.
This new one, No Thank You, rips up the formula and just goes back to the basics, with some help from frequent collaborator Inflo, one of the names behind the mysterious SAULT that I covered a few weeks ago—VENOM.
The result is some of the coolest beats I’ve heard in a while, with one of 2023’s best MCs rapping over them—VEMON?
Es “Swallowed Whole”
I’ve been a big fan of Es for a while, back when the only video of theirs was a blurry punk show in London. Now they have fancy music videos and I hope that means I’ll be seeing a lot more from them.
Brasileiro Garantido “CR005”
idk what this is, but it’s cool
bar italia! “Nurse!”
HELLLLLOOOOO “NURSE!”
(Another one I liked)
Nourished By Time “Daddy”
I’ve already written about Nourished By Time, but I wanna reiterate how cool it is that Marcus Brown takes 90’s R&B and 90’s dance elements and mixes it up in a blender with some weird third genre from the future, making something equally poppy and experimental. This song rules.
K.P. & Envyi “Swing My Way”
Not a new song, but new to me! Unless I just remember it subconsciously from 1998, which is actually more likely. I was a weird 10-year-old boy who listened to the radio a lot and had strong opinions about R&B hits.
Yo La Tengo “Until It Happens”
It’s Yo La Tengo, it’s always good.
